I have not actually read a for fun book (or any book) for at least a month, so when I saw The Help by Kathryn Stockett, I figured "Why the h not?" I had heard some friends had read it (and when I say "friends" I mean people on Facebook), but it wasn't what I normally read, so I didn't pick it up when it first came out (which has been at least 6 months).
The Help is told from 3 different characters' perspective, and is set in the early 60s in Jackson, Mississippi - 2 maids and a 24-year old recent Ole' Miss graduate. Not to give too much away - but it is really realistic in how poorly people were treated just because of the color of their skin, and how they decide to do something about it.
Like I said, this is something I wouldn't normally have picked up, and I am glad I did - I read it in like 4 days (and it is THICK). The voice of the story is amazing, and the story is mind-boggling for those of us who never lived during that time.
